I have mixed feelings about this park. I have never seen a campground set up like this before. All the sites are pull throughs located parallel to the road. Yes, many of the sites are spacious and some, depending on which side of the road you are camped, are private. Many larger rigs do camp here but the location of trees within the site make it impossible to pull through some sites. Some of them would have to be backed into/out of. Campground loops are two way with very narrow roads with trees close to the road and I am not sure what would happen if 2 rigs met each other. They do have a large parking lot where you can disconnect and drive through which is a big hassle for a 5th wheel. Camp hosts did not interact with campers. Comfort stations (bathhouses) are old but clean. Dump station is located in a weird location. We had to exit our loop and drive all the way around the park to access it because it is in the middle of the park, not on the way out. Not sure if we would stay here again.
This is a great campground for either an overnight stop or even a stop of a few days as there are some sightseeing possibilities in the area. Easy in/out to I-95. Road noise and occasional train may bother some. Bathrooms and laundry room were very clean. Verizon Air Card worked well. Staff friendly and helpful, escorting you to your site and giving directions to businesses in nearby towns. We would stay at this campground again.
This campground is only adequate for an overnight stay. Unfortunately, we usually stay longer visitng family in the area and this campground is the best of the worst close to our relatives. This KOA has very narrow sites located on a hillside and there is very little room in between sites. We chose a water/electric site because we damaged our rig getting out of a full hook up site. Smaller rigs may not have as much of a problem. Lots of seasonal campers located here. We decided not to use the dump station as it is slanted incorrectly and would not have allowed our tanks to empty. Verizon cell and air card service is good. This campground is not located in Madison, but in Ruffs Dale, PA. I-70 is really weird in this area. There are no acceleration lanes to get on interstate. You have to stop before entering and hope no one runs you down as you come up to speed.
This was a good park for an overnight stay. Some might be bothered by the road noise from nearby I-70. Restrooms and laundry room were dated but very clean. Odd though that the bathroom stalls did not have doors only shower curtains. One negative for us was the low hanging tree branches at our site. With management's permission, we cut them enough so they would not tear up our roof. We would stop at this campground again.
This is a wonderful Virginia State Park. Will accomodate large rigs in both the pull thrus and back ins in the newer loop. Camp hosts were wonderful. Verizon Air Card service was good. Shopping and restaurants were nearby. Beware, there is a $5.00 per night per pet charge. Will stay at this park again.
This is a beautiful state park, just not for big rigs. We called the state park in advance of making reservations and they said "no problem" for our 40 foot 5th wheel. We stayed at the Lakeside campground loop. Our site was long enough for us to park. Getting in was not the problem, we did not think we would be able to get out. We had to trim some low hanging limbs to protect our rig and required the help of 2 other campers to get through the very narrow, sharp turn with trees on either side. We only scraped a hubcap on a front tire and we feel very fortunate at that. One campground loop would be problematic for most 5th wheels because of the big dip once in that loop and it has a same way in/out. Not sure what you would do if you met someone. The other campground loop up near the office has a low, narrow bridge that floods. Once that happens, you are stuck until the water recedes. Campground roads are narrow, hilly, and twisitng but driveable. It is a beautiful park and it looked like the fishing was good. We will not return though because it is really not big rig friendly.
This campground is in the middle of nowhere. There is marginal cell phone service and we had to use a antenna and booster to use our air card. It is an older campground and the bath houses show that. They recently put in some sewer hookups for some of the sites. Pull through sites were extremely unlevel. Hook ups arre in wierd locations. They were on the opposite side for us so bring extra hoses and cords and we had vewry little water pressure. Campground is located in a "dry" county and stores of any size are a minimum of 1o miles. The road into the campground is a shocker for people who have never been there before. You must make a sharp left hand turn and then go up a very steep hill. Better have a good tow vehicle if you have a big rig to get up this hill. It is actually easier to get out than in. We probably would not stay here again.
This is a military campground. This used to be a mobile home park and has been converted to a RV park. Sewer hook ups are in wierd places because of this. Beware of sites that flood. We always had a big puddle to step into when getting in/out of our rig and there was lots of rain. This campground has no cable TV or WiFi service and the rates are higher than some of the other local military campgrounds. Camp host was helpful. If you like the screaming sound of FA-18s, this is the place for you. I realize that this is a military facility, however, the military jets fly over (low) all day until about 10:00 pm and they are very loud. For this reason, we would only stay here again if we could not get into another military campoground when in the area.
This is a rustic campground located approximately 25 miles east of Charlottesville, VA. This campground has lots of fulltime and seasonal campers. A few of the campers are old but not junky. The dump station was difficult for us to get to because there are so many trees. Bathrooms were clean, at least the ones by the office were. We would stay at this campground again.
